For two centuries, the central challenge of education was access to knowledge. We built schools, libraries, and the internet to close that gap. We largely succeeded. And then AI made the whole problem irrelevant overnight.
Knowledge retrieval is now trivial. Any fact, any framework, any synthesis of existing ideas is a prompt away.
So why are we still optimizing for it?
The capacities that actually matter — critical thinking, creativity, judgment — don’t develop through fluency. They develop through friction. And our current model, with AI deployed in the service of frictionless learning, isn’t preparing students for the world AI is building. It’s preparing them to be its most compliant users.
